PrimaLuna - Italian for "First Moon" - is a Mondial tube electronics brand founded in 2003 by Herman van den Dungen, a High-end distributor from the Netherlands. Over 30 years of experience in design, manufacturing, exporting, importing, retailing and after-sales service has resulted in a range of affordable and reliable yet highly musical products. Together with Marcel Croz and Dominique Chene, with the help of lamp guru Kevin Diehl, he led his team to offer the best products with the best service at the best price.
One of the main ideas was to shift the main tasks of after-sales service to the design of the device itself. Distributors, dealers and customers should not waste their valuable time tuning or repairing an amplifier. Lamp failure should under no circumstances cause damage to the circuit. The maximum that the owner will have to do on his own is replacing the lamp or fuse. It is also important that if the lamp is replaced, no adjustment of the bias current is required. The fact is that the company's engineers came up with a special system for stabilizing the bias current at the required level - Adaptive AutoBias with additional circuit protection using fuses.
Only selected high-quality components are used in the amplifier circuit, such as musical and especially linear Japanese TAKMAN resistors with low noise levels, custom toroidal power transformers in massive cases, self-winding wideband output transformers, ceramic lamp sockets; ALPS volume control; capacitors from Nichicon and DuRoch; Philips superfast diodes; massive gold-plated column terminals of the WBT design (all terminals are milled from copper and have no internal cavities - for better conductivity and increased reliability); Gold-plated RCA input connectors on the panel.
All PrimaLuna transformers are equipped with PTPTM (Power Transformer Protection) circuitry. If the power transformer overheats or is overloaded, this circuit cuts off power to the primary winding, allowing it to cool before damage is done. When the transformer cools down, the connection is restored and, if nothing has failed, the amplifier will turn on again and work correctly.
In all of its products, PrimaLuna uses point-to-point wiring and carefully thought-out component placement. The entire signal path, including resistors and capacitors, is painstakingly soldered by hand with a thick cable by masters of their craft.
